Geographic Location


With a total population of 87 million, Sichuan claims the most populous province cross the country.
Covering a land of 485,000 sq km, 5.1% of China¡¯s total area, Sichuan ranks the 5th place.
Under its jurisdiction, there are 21 cities (prefectures).
Chengdu is the capital city of Sichuan Province .

From Beijing to Chengdu, it takes 2 hours and 20 minutes by airplane.
From Shanghai to Chengdu, it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes by airplane.
From Guangzhou to Chengdu, it takes 1 hour and 50 minutes by airplane.

Economy

Sichuan¡¯s GDP ranks the 9th place amongst 31 provinces and municipalities of the country in 2005.

Chengdu¡¯s GDP ranks the 4th place amid the provincial capitals and the 10th place amid domestic cities of the country in 2005 respectively.

Resources

Hydropower resources
Hydropower resources (140,000,000 kw of theoretical reserve) of Sichuan Province account for 20.7% of China¡¯s total water power resources, ranking the 2nd place cross the country, among which technical exploitation amount stands at 120,000,000 kw, making up 22.2% of the country¡¯s and ranking the 1st place in China . Sichuan is undoubtedly the largest base of hydroelectric development and the diversion of electricity from the western to the eastern regions in West China.

Natural Gas Resources
Proven original gas in-place amounts to 554,500,000,000 cubic meters, about one third of the country¡¯s proven natural gas reserve ashore.

Mineral Resources
Storage capacity of titanium mine, navajoite, troilite, melting crystal, optical fluorite, chalk, and gangquarz for glass production each ranks the number one in China, the other 28 minerals each holds the 3rd place in China.

Fauna and flora resources
Sichuan is subject to the subtropical zone climate. The province witnesses a total area of woods of 123,400 sq km and a forest coverage rate of 28.98%. Sichuan is home to one fifth of China¡¯s ¡®living fossil¡¯ species such as metasequoia and silver fir.
Of its 55 precious and rare animals under the state protection, 85% of the world-renamed giant panda inhabitant in the province.

Tourist resources
Apart from the world-famed Jiuzhai Valley, Huanglong (literally ¡®Yellow Dragon¡¯), Mt. Emei ¨C Leshan Giant Buddha, Dujiang Irrigation System ¨C Mt. Qingcheng listed as the World Natural and Cultural Heritage sites as well as 9 national level tourist attractions including Bamboo Sea of South Sichuan, there are 11 national forest parks and 40 natural reserves, ranging from plateau and mountain and gorge to basin to hill to plain to river and lake to hotspring and fall to karst feature to ¡®Danxia¡¯ landform etc.

Transport and Transportation

Railway:
5 main railways including Chengdu-Chongqing and Chengdu ¨C Kunming and Chengdu ¨C Baoji, 8 railway branch lines, and 4 local railways form a network with a total operation mileage of 2,988 km.

In 2005 the provinces saw a total volume of railway freight of 73.35 mln tons and volume of rail passenger transportation of 51.22 person-times.

Road:
As of the end of year 2005, the mileage of expressway in Sichuan amounted to 1,759km, ranking the first place in West China and 6th in the entire country. An expressway system, with Chengdu as a centre, is preliminarily completed, hooking up to all cities and prefectures of the province.

Aviation:
In addition to Chengdu Shuangliu Int¡¯l Airport, 6 civil airports in Mianyang, Dachuan, Yibin, Luzhou, Xichang, and Nanchong were run into operation.

Chengdu Shuangliu Int¡¯l Airport runs as many as 200-odd domestic and int¡¯l routes, including 24 int¡¯l routes to HK, Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Kathmandu, and Paris etc.

Port:

Port of the province

Leshan Port: 130km from Chengdu by Chengdu ¨C Leshan expressway, and is allowed 500-1,000 ton cargo ship in high water period.

Luzhou Port: 290km from Chengdu by Chengdu ¨C Luzhou expressway, and is allowed 2,000 ¨C 3,000 ton cargo ship. Its annual handling capacity reaches 20,000 standard containers.

The nearest port outside of the province

Chongqing Port: 360km from Chengdu by Chengdu ¨C Chongqing expressway, boasts an annual cargo handling capacity of 350,000 standard containers, and is allowed 5,000 ¨C 10,000 ton cargo ship. The port is fitted with customs control and inspection facilities, by which cargos, upon arrival, can be transferred to companies for customs clearance. Cargos may be shipped to Chongqing, Luzhou, and Leshan via waterway, and then further delivered to Chengdu.

Telecommunication

As of the end of year 2005, the province witnesses realization of the programmed control telephone exchange system for all counties and cities. 17 cities have access into the int¡¯l telephone network, reaching nearly 200 countries and regions all over the world. A modern telecommunication system based on internet, microwave, optical fibre, satellite, programmed control telephone, wireless paging, mobile phone, and graphics contest transmission is established.The province¡¯s total optical cable stands at 203,000 km.

Capacity of local telephone programmed control exchange totals 4,145 sets, and registered users of public telephone network are up to 15.77 mln, mobile phone users 16.9 mln, and registered internet user 3.16 mln.

Education

Of Sichuan¡¯s 72 ordinary colleges and universities, there are 775,000 undergraduate (associate degree) candidates as of 2005. As many as 31 institutions are qualified to confer master degrees and currently 490,000 postgraduate candidates are reported.

507 schools provide vocational education (vocational middle school, ordinary secondary technical school, and middle vocational education training), with a total of 655,000 students on campus now.
